"the doctor will now waffle on a bit" |
ask dr. fletch (2nd lot) inspired?
aggrieved? or just plain nosey? (more recent questions are nearest the top of page) |
| the topic | the query | the doctor's response |
| Bad fade! | Dear Dr. Fletch, I have to say the new album is really great, but I'm wondering why was "Hill Farmer's Blues" so 'awfully' faded-out? | a
popular opinion this. Mark's reaction is simply "the song is over". |
| Old questions | 1)
Will DS ever reform for a one off gig? ( I would sell the contents of my flat
for that one!!) 2)You have been involved in a lot of MK's projects, from on every street through rag pickers dream, do you prefer the old stuff eg DS or do you just enjoy working with MK 3) Please please tell me....How did you get to play with DS on every street, I saw the gigg at the SECC Glasgow it was incredible.....How long have you been playing?? If I played 50 years I couldnt play like you. Do you still practice and 'muck about?' |
1. No 2. It's all very nice. 3. I was in the band so I did the tour. I've been playing keyboards since I was 17. I occasionally practice and I'm always 'mucking about'. |
| My stuff | Have you recorded your own compositions? Do you write music? Can you tell me about how you collaborate with others? Do you pool ideas, or what? Do you get sick of everyone asking questions? I am a jeweler, so you could ask me a million jewelry questions and I'll answer every one; I love music but am too busy with my family & business to indulge my interest. I enjoy your site and am curious. Thank you, AMS | I am constantly writing my own stuff. That's what I do. I'm a composer for film and television mostly. I collaborate with many people and enjoy the buzz of working with others. If I got sick of the questions...this page wouldn't exist. |
| Toothless | Hi
: What's up Doc? (have been dying to say that) You've written some about GF's project Tooth, but you haven't told us what the movie is about. You have to admit Tooth is an odd title. Is this some kind of geordie expression? That seems to be the rage these days. The new studio looks terrific. I especially like the retro 40's blackout curtains. Always cutting edge that Guy. Best regards |
The movie is about a teenage tooth fairy - with an attitude. I'm reluctant to say more as there is still no confirmation of the shooting date yet. I'll announce when the time is right. |
| dates | When can we expect the dates for the ragpickers dream tour? i am very excited about it. and are you coming to toronto?? if so, is it possible to get backstage passes? plus, did MK use his 59' Gibson ES-335 on any of the new songs?? | I don't know when the tour dates will be announced. I guess you should watch MK's site for the latest. |
| BV's | Hello Doc- I noticed in the Ragpicker liner notes posted on Terry's website that only two tracks are listed as having backing vocals- Why Aye Man (Healy/Nail) and You Don't Know You're Born(Guy). But on listening to the audio clips, I hear backing vocals on Devil Baby, Quality Shoe, and Daddy's Gone to Knoxville. Is this also The Fletch, or perhaps another uncredited appearance by Vince Gill? And why not listed in the credits? | Mark insisted on doing nearly all thye BV's on this one. A fine job he did too. |
| old shit | 1.Did
Dire Straits ever record Private Dancer? If so, how did it sound compared to Tina
Tuners version and any chance it will ever surfaace?
2. About how many unrelease Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler songs are laying around in the vault? Any chance we'll see a Dire Straits box set with some of these goodies? |
1. No DS never did. 2. There's always a chance. |
| huh? | Seems like the new single released officially the 16th Sep. is not yet available :-(, neither in France, nor in Switzerland, why is it so? Does it suffer from an unsufficient promotion although 'what it is' was well sold and promoted 2 years ago. I add that fans are a bit lost with all these muti-tracks single with or without bonus etc ...Well, what's going on? | You're lost. I'm completely baffled! I have absolutely NO idea. You think anyone tells me? The record company is a mysterious thing. |
| Spuds | Hi
Dr. Fletch.
I've got a question concerning the B-side of Why Aye Man, entitled Small Potatoes. When was it recorded? Is it from the TRD sessions, or from the STP sessions? It sounds rather 'electric' when compared to the material on TRD, that's why I wondered. |
It was indeed from the RPD (TRD) sessions. |
| keys | Hi,
I just got the new cd singles, both the 2 song and 4 song version and i was amazed
by the live versions, the sound is perfect and the second vocal parts on So Far
Aways are great, same with the keyboard parts.. was this version played differently
then on other concerts because i dont remember it sounding like this in Amsterdam. And which keyboard was used on the track? |
Thanks, I believe it was the trusty Korg trinity and the Roland JD800 |
| silent Emmy | Guy, Been reading the credits on 'Ragpicker', No Emmylou Harris credit, yet she appears in your foto dairy of recording, has she been mixed out ? What's the story ? | The songs we cut with Emmy, are destined for a duet album. When that will be done is anybody's guess. |
| Technolove | I read on another site that you had participated in online chat sessions...do you chat with fans anymore? Also, out of curiosity, did you build your own site? If so, you must have a serious bent toward technology. It's a wonderful job and so entertaining. I wonder where you get the time to do the diary and all the updates and Q&A. Are you really a net geek in disguise? |
I haven't done a chat for a while now. I'll probably do some more next time out on the road. Yes, I did build my own website (initial pages written by Dan Fletcher) Technology and me.....we have a 'thing'. |
| composing | Hi
Dr Fletch, What an impressive studio you have! It looks great! You should put
a web cam to broadcast on your web site! I was wondering, when you are writing
a movie soundtrack, at what stage of the movie development do you compose the
music? Is it just by reading the script, seeing the first shots? |
Thanks...no webcam for me. Usually on movies, the composer comes onto the scene just after shooting. In the case of 'Tooth', I'm involved from the script reading stage. Initial themes are being written now. |
| pears | hi Doc ! another boring question for you.. when you are recording a tune, and you play live with acoustic guitars and vocal. perhaps you find out later that you have to put on a new vokal-take. how does that work, when the orginal vokal-take is "all over" the guitar take ? it must be very difficult to mix it right afterwards ? also, are hammond organ, pedal steel, pad played live in the studio ? | If the guitar is 'all over' the vocal, then you have no alternative but to comp using 'paired tracks' ie...vocal and guitar always stay together. It puts pressure on the performer to GET IT *@@&%ing RIGHT! |
| that infernal song again | Now that the new album is done and closed can you tell us why "pyroman" was left out? It's every fan's query. It is what everybody expected.Don't you unerstand? Why didn't you give your fans what they want? Well i'm sure you know something more than we do, but at least tell us! |
Pyroman was left out for the same reason dozens of other songs have been left off albums throughout the history of music. It simply wasn't wanted. It was fun to play live though and it IS on the list for me to mix from the STP live recordings, so maybe it will see the light of day someday. (what's it worth!) Don't forget...even with MK....not all songs make it the course. |
| releases |
Hi
Dr. Fletch, |
As far as I know, his official site is now www.mark-knopfler.com This free dvd is I think..the bonus CD. More than that I DO NOT KNOW as keeping up with what the record company plan to put out in various territories doesn't really concern me. |
| produce me some wine! | Guy- How much influence does a record producer have into what the album sounds like, musically? I know that, for example, Neil Dorfsman is known for giving albums sort of a "shimmery" sound; I think Jimmy Iovine leant Making Movies that Springsteen sound (with Roy Bittan - don't want to slight the keyboard player!). Does Chuck contribute much musically, or does he mostly handle the technical/recording/mixing side? Any other producers you or Mark would like to work with? I myself would really like to hear Daniel Lanois produce one of Mark's albums. They've worked with so many of the same people, and it's a sound that would complement Mark, I think. |
It depends on the artist as to how much influence/freedom the producer has. With MK, it's difficult for the producer as Mark always has a very good idea of the way he wants things to sound. He is more open to ideas these days, although with Ragpickers, he had a concept and pretty much stuck with it! Like any good producer, Chuck contributes musically as well as sonically. I agree that Daniel Lanois would offer something interesting to Mark's sound...but believe me....it won't happen. trust me. |
| mountain chicken | Dr. Fletch: How is your keyboarding majesty doing? My dumb question is: Do you see any change in Mark´s musical approach over the years? I mean, if the "1)MK writing-2) MK singing in front of the band 3) musicians developing then their ideas-4) record a track together" proccess that nowadays you deal with has been as that all the time; was it the same in the BIA years? I read a recent interview wih Terry Williams and he said that, when Brothers in Arms was digitally recorded in Montserrat, the working process was pretty much like this: he would stay the whole day by the pool, and sometimes he was asked to play a concrete cymbal beat (all by himself), and then sent back to the hamaca (he said that for him this was a tough thing to do, since he was more a garage-kind of rocking crazy instead of a studio professional). What do you think? Thanks for letting us bore you to death with our fanatic integrism kind of crap. |
MK has evolved 1. more true to himself these days I feel. 2. Sings clearer and takes on more vocal challenges these days. (non smoker now) 3. More freedom for musicians in the early stages of recording. 4. Montserrat was no different from the way most albums were recorded except that we were all stuck together on an island , unable to get away from each other, 3 months of constant beer, barbeques, dancing, mountain chicken, sun, swimming, jamming, creativly expressing ourselves, windsurfing! ....it was hell. |
| heirarchy | I'm interested in how bands function: How does someone become a band leader? Does it happen by the other members appreciating this person's outstanding qualities and talent? Or is it a struggle for power? Say for instance in the case of MK and his band (which GF happens to be a part of), how do things work there? Are things different now than with the Straits? Cheers, TD |
Good one this. I've never known a band to form and simply elect a leader. It's usually pretty obvious who will take charge...and often is a struggle for power. Certainly in my earlier bands, any battles for supremacy usually ended up in the band splitting. Because MK writes the songs and always has a clear idea of what he wants, he's in charge. It's pretty much the same as it was in the Straits although he allows much more musical freedom since going solo. Older AND wiser. |
| Trunks | Hi
Doc. 1= Do you have a list of the MK 2003 tour???.Do you think you will be back at the Canada Ottawa Corel center or maybe in my city, Montreal???. 2= Can we take pics of the show with a digital Camera???. 3= I saw your new studio pics and I don`t see the wires. Are they travel under the floor or they just not installed right now???. |
1. No dates yet. 2. Yes 3. All the cables are in under-floor trunking.....my dream. |
| Mellow tron | Dear
Dr. Fletch, Do you know if Guy has ever played a Mellotron?, what does he think about it? |
Yes, many years ago..It was clanky, but cool. The 7 second note duration limit was always fun. |
| Sweat | Dear Doctor, I have always wondered, is there any story behind the headbands/wristbands MK used to wear? I don't think I've ever seen a picture of him from the 80's where he ISN'T wearing them and I was wondering how they became such a big part of Mark's "look" back in the DS days. Also, do you have anything for the insomnia I've been suffering from waiting for the release of the next album? | He always said it was simply to absorb the copious amounts of sweat generated during the gigs. |
| DVD saga | 1:
Anything new about the STP-DVD(Fans are waiting!!!!)? 2: Why the hell are the tracks Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing and Two Young Lovers are missing on both the CD and Video?? We (the fans) can't really understand that, because these were the highlights of each concert! Was there a reason why these tracks were missing (Record Company or MK) and is it possible that the WHOLE concert "On the night" will be released on DVD?? (Maybe you can make some pressure on Guy to get that one out!) I know that many fans were really disappointed at that time! |
1.
Yes, I'm starting on it now. 2. I absolutely haven't a clue. |
| not MK again | 1.
Putting Mark's solo album aside for now, have u ever thought of doing ur own solo
album. And if not, why not? 2. Can u remember what synth u used for the intro to Money for Nothing on Brothers in arms? 3. In ur new studio, will u be using (or are u using) Hard disk, DAT, or even Analogue tape. Is it computer based and if so what software will/are u using, PRO Tools, Nuendo, Cubase or another? |
1.
I've often thought about it but just havn't devoted enough time to it yet! |
| Nintendo est splendo | as I'm a Nuendo user myself and because I appreciated the sound of the STP record (warm & full) very much, I just wanted to ask which converters you use in the studio and which resolution the songs are usually recorded with (24/96?). Or do you think the recorded sound is mostly the result of the mic preamps you use? | we used Mytek and RME converters and recorded at 96K 32bit (from 16track analog) The mic pre's do make a massive difference. We used many and varied. 'Brain fade' prevents me from recalling which. |
| friend or foe | Doc, Tell me, Guy and Mark; good friendship or working relationship? Does Guy sometimes feel as though he is constantly in the shadow of someone else or is he happy the way things are? Of course, Guy might tell me to mind my own business. |
Mind your own......we get on ok. although we don't socialise much these days. |
| my private parts | Hello
GUY. Where can I find the partitions for the keybords and the 2nd guitar in the
On the night Tour. Tanks for your answer. |
This
is a bit of a mind meld to me. I don't have a clue. If I were you, I'd listen and transcribe yourself...Don't rely on those books, use your ears! I'm sure they would serve you well. |
| Surfung | 1.
What kinda surfboard does Guy use? 2. Has Guy ever surfed in Holland? 3. Would Mark be interested in trying a modified Pensa guitar, which sounds absolutely great!! 4. Is there any news on the DVD, like if its done on 5.1 soundmix? |
Ah,
my favourite subject 1. Guy's windsurf board is a Naish 8'5" waveboard, and for surfing he uses a Fanatic 9'2" longboard 2. not as yet 3. I would doubt it as he's so into his Srats and Les Pauls right now 4. Sorry but I'm still waiting for the go-ahead. |
| sleep? | Doc,
how do you all sleep after a recording session? Does the thrill go away in time,
or is it always an adrenaline rush? Is it the same feeling with concerts? How
do you all sleep? |
After a recording session we all sleep just the same as anyone who has done a day's work. There's no particular adrenaline rush like there is when you walk on stage. It is fun, but it's just what we do for a living. |
| DS reformed | I'd be interested to know if the new DS formation seemed as special to you guys on stage as it sounded to us mere mortals who stood for hours outside to see one of the best MK nights we've seen in a long, long time. |
Not really, but there was an brief element of nostalgia about it. I'm glad you enjoyed it...it WAS fun wasn't it. Maybe we'll do it again sometime. |
| wind |
Where
is the most interesting place that Guy has windsurfed?? the most memorable one? |
Ah a real question....probably Redonda for interest and Hookipa on Maui for adrenaline. MK whizzes around at breathtaking velocities on a Triumph, a Ducati and a Honda. Don't ask me which models. |
| got me | Now
that the track list, etc., is on Mark's "official" web site, could
you
answer a few questions about the studio diary for me?
1.
What song has the ukelele solo? |
I
didn't know that the track list had been published. 1. I don't think there is a uke solo anywhere although Jim and Richard played uke on the record...somewhere 2. again I'm at a loss, especially as I've not heard the record since May. 3. Cool drums are probably on a track called Small potatoes. I heard i'ts not on the record though (probably end up as a bonus track) |
| Death of Pyroman |
4 in a row (Shot at Glory soundtrack)... very good track - would make a good opener for a show? Would certainly get the crowds warmed up in no time. Looking forward to the new album - and the inevitable question - whatever happened to "Pyroman" - has it been recorded or will it suffer the "Think I love you too much" fate - an excellent song that never made it onto an MK record? Like the Braithwaites soundtrack, by the way - although "the big wank" is a pretty dodgy title, is it not? |
I guess Pyroman died....just like the bass! Not if you've seen the scene. |
| piano | hi
doc could you tell me if if the colour of mk's guitars have changed in the new
album,i mean does he use another type of distortion( with more drive and delay
such as gary moore for instance) or does he keep his famous sound pure as water?
I'm a guitarist and mk inspired me a lot,do you think that guitar fans will be
delighted with this new album? I also like your personal touch and I'd like to
hear you play more piano (i mean a real classic piano!!) I can remember jim cox
playing at the end of 'sultans of swing' and i can tell you it was a great moment
. why not use it for an unplugged album? see you soon doc |
MK will always seek the sound which fits the track the best. It's not as if he has the 'MK' settings. He just gets a sound and lo and behold...it sounds like Mark. Of course the choice of guitar and amp is important and we will often try many different combinations before deciding on one. |
| various | Dear
Dr. Fletch, I have a few questions for you: 1. Is Mark's next album The Rag Picker's Dream will include bonus tracks of live performances of Mark's Songs? 2. Is it Guy playing on the album Last Exit To Brooklyn? 3. Is there any a chance to get the albums Money For Nothing and Extendedanceplay on a CD? I know that Extendedanceplay was released on LP and MFN was released on CD but since Sultans Of Swing (the collection) was released, MFN is history. 4. I know that Guy and Mark wont come to perform in my country (Israel). Is there any a chance to get DS and MK stuff signed by MK and GF (without me flying all over Europe)? 5. Has Mark ever worked with Chris Rea? Their style (of singing and guitar playing) is almost the same!!! |
1.
sorry, no 2. It certainly is. Infact, Guy played everything except guitars and fiddle. 3. sorry, not my territory that one. 4. A bit tricky that one as any arrangement will undoubtedly open up the flood gates, I'll ask. 5. I believe he has collaborated on Chris's albums in the past...don't ask me which though. |
| cuts | Doc (I's assuming PhD not MD), do artists ever (for pure personal pleasure even) play deeper album cuts or is it simply a matter of sitting in a studio for a couple of days banging it out and that's the last time the song's ever played? Take "Brats" for example. That would seem like a fun song to trot out once in a while. | Good point. Occasionally we'll do that but it's generally the most obvious songs that we'll indulge in. |
| final
oldies question |
When you say that Mark Knopfler does not want to revisit the past...does this mean that you wont be playing Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, or Sultans of Swing on the upcoming tour? It just can't be. A concert without Telegraph Road is a sacrilege. |
OK. Please, no more questions on this matter. All I can say is that of course we play some of the old stuff, generally the ones we have rehearsed in the past and know work well live. Romeo for example is always nice AND it takes on slightly different arrangements each time we attempt it. I appreciate there's such a wealth of good, old songs to choose from but we just don't play often enough to warrant running that stuff. Don't forget, we are always looking to the future and Mark has some 'beauties' in the pipeline...trust me. |
| surgical support | Why do you prescribe only occasional support bands for MKs shows? It's seems quite an unusual situation as there must be plenty of interested parties and it would be good for the general health of your roadies. ;-) Also, what do you think Guy might do if, heaven forbid, MK decided to work with someone else for a while instead? |
I actually don't know the answer to the 'support' act question, but it's always nice to have an opening act. If MK decides to use someone else, cool, it will give Fletch time to do the stuff he's always wanted to do...you see, Guy just can't seem to say NO!...a real sucker for punishment. It's beyond me. |
| charity | my question is, for those of us who would LOVE to be there, but can't, how can we find out information on making a contribution to one of the charities, in Mark's name? I'd love to see MK's fans join with him in making a difference. And, to all those fans who want to hear the old stuff, I say, "Get over it!" Mark's the artist, he's the genius, Let him make the musical calls! |
See the MK NEWS site for info on the various charities. Thank you. |
| set | please, can you already give us a short info about the set-list for the charity-concerts??? What songs have you tried so far? |
Sorry. No set-lists. We do have Jimmy Nail with us though and we'll be doing Why Aye Man! It's fab. Keep it to yourselves. |
| G | hi doc! i have a question for you... why is the national steel guitar tuned to open G and it's not in standard E or anyone else (F, Bb,..)?? i think it could do the same work tuned to, for example, E or am i wrong? thankyou | That's the way it's been for MK for ever, mainly for him to play Romeo and Juliet. I think the National would complain if it were to change, it is 70 years old after all! |
| short stops | There’s one thing I’ve never found the answer to. It’s been puzzling me since the latest DS tour, the Golden Heart tour and the latest one. Why are you always making these single stops in the Scandinavian countries? Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and then off to Helsinki. Is Mark not keen on visiting the countries up here? Do you go by personal interest or record sales? | I'm afraid it's all to do with money as most things are nowdays. The tour setup allows us only a short visit to these territories. We DO try to go everywhere we can, but the main restriction is the time we have available to us. It's a big subject and I don't pretend to know everything about it but I do get MANY requests from all around the world asking us to visit. The Bottom line is MK only wants to tour 'small' so places like Albania and Tasmania are out of luck for now. We can't even make it to OZ (booo-hooo) |
| AC | Could you please tell us what has Alan Clark done lately? Most of us don´t know what is he on nowadays. Hasn't he ever thought of starting a solo career? | He does have a solo career as he does a lot of TV music these days. |
| strings? | Does Mark always change his strings of his guitars after every concert? | Mark doesn't change his strings...Glenn Saggers does. Generally every other day. |
| beltona? | 1. the "National" guitar is the Beltona? how much does it cost?...2. What it the meaning of the sentence: Twisting by the pool?3. Brothers in arms is such a sad song. Do you what's the background for this song? (why MK wrote BIA?) | 1.
The National isn't a Beltona, it's a 1933 National Steel and I'm not permitted
to say how much it cost but you can pick a good one up for between 5 and $10,000. 2. It means 'twisting' beside a pool. 3. I believe it's about the armed forces in the Falklands crisis. |
| rehearsals | 1.
How many days per week and hours per day are you rehearsing? 2. How many songs are you rehearsing more or less every day 3. How many songs (aprox.) are going to make up the set list of July gigs? 4. The Beaulieu gig...is going to be musically different to the London gigs? |
1.
5 days and 8 hours a day 2. We've run through the whole set now but started off with about 6 per day. 3. About 23 4. No. The same set applies |
| movies | Hi---Mark
and yourself must get loads of requests to do film scores,so what makes you decide
on a particular one,the ones you have done have been quite different!! Plus why has,nt A Shot to Glory been released here in Canada????---both MK and soccer are popular in these here parts!!-so whats the problem!! |
MK gets loads of film requests and he decides by whether or not he likes the script and also if he's available or not. I'm getting more requests these days (still not enough for my liking) and will take on just about anything within reason. |
| set | Hi Doc! Now that rehearsals are underway, and you know the set list, have you any idea how long the show should last, and what time it should end, so I can figure out whether i can catch the coach home? And also, will there be a warm-up act of some kind, or is it Knopfler all the way? |
We plan to go onstage at 8:00 and play for about 2 and a bit hours, and there is no support act. Just us. |
| old stuff | Is it true that Mark is not going to play his very-old songs (from the very early days at DS) never again? |
YES. It's true. MK is not really interested in Re-visiting the PAST as there's such a lot of NEW music to look forward to. I can't honestly say I blame him. I do understand the fans love and fondness to for oldies....that's life...we move on. |
| bass skills | Dear Medicinal Eminence: I´d like to know what kind of place is where you are rehearsing at; By the pictures it looks like some kind of airplane hangar or something like that. I´d also like to know how do you doc see (in your specialist´s point of view) Illsley´s playing skills: has he kept the essences of his elegant-unshowy-smooth technique of playing bass? And how was the reunion in an emotional point of view? By the way, the man at MK´s left is Robbie McIntosh? Thanks, doctor. |
It's a rehearsal studio somewhere in deepest London. It was nice to be playing with JI again. It's been a while for him though! Emotionally, we're still the same old piss-taking, memory-losing, groove-enhibiting bunch of old farts we always were. Robbie Macintosh excepted of course!!! |
| broken again? | How does Mark and Guy select the gear for a world tour or smaller charity gigs? | We just plug in the stuff we used on the previous outing and hope it all works. we start with everything, and if a particular piece isn't used, or we've forgotten how it works.....it goes back into storage. |
| drums??? | Dr.
Fletch, who is playing the instruments on the Golden Heart bonus tracks "Gravy
Train", "Tall Order Baby", "What Have I Got To Do", and
"My Claim To Fame"? (The liner notes on the singles "Darling Pretty"
and "Cannibals", which feature there (superb) tracks, doesn't mention
any musicians, thus making me a bit curious.)
Also, is Mark considering himself a good drummer? I think he did an outstanding job on "Going Home" (from the Local Hero soundtrack) :-) |
The band was the same as far as I recall. Mark doesn't play drums. Certainly not on LH. |
| forecast | Hi
Doc: So how's the weather? Got a forecast for next week? |
High pressure is dominant this week, so a settled period can be expected with light north westerly winds and warm temperatures. Watch that sun kids! Look out for the meteors. |
| sightseeing | Hi Dr Fletch, I wonder if musicians during a tour have enough time to visit the cities they're playing in ? Do they remember some cities, or is it just names and dates on the tour program ? For example, do you (hum, uh... sorry ! ''does GF'', I mean) remember Lyon in France ? What is your memory of this town ? | The simple answer is no. However, I do remember the places where we stay for longer than a few days and Lyon is one of them. |
| covers | Hope you are well there in the U.K? How come Alan Clark will not be appearing at the live shows? Can you explain to me how one artist gets the permission to record another artists material? |
Mark simply wanted Geraint. Personally, I'd love to see AC on the gig again but It's not my band. If an artist wants to cover a song, he should get in touch with the local office of Universal publishing who will inform you of the correct procedure. |
